WA businesses will need a safety plan to reopen

Indoor and outdoor fitness classes of 20 people will be permitted from May 18, provided there is minimal sharing of equipment.

This post has been edited 15/05/2020 to reflect new information from the WA Government.

WA cafes, restaurants, and indoor fitness classes can reopen from May 18, but they must complete an official COVID Safety Plan first.

The affected businesses will also need to stick to social distancing rules and a 20-patron limit.

The WA Government has released general guidelines, as well as tailored measures for food businesses, and sport and recreation services.

Businesses requiring a COVID Safety Plan include:

  • food businesses (cafés and restaurants);
  • community and cultural venues; and
  • sport and recreation facilities.

Businesses that weren’t required to close can choose to complete a COVID Safety Plan voluntarily.

Businesses that complete a plan can display a COVID Safety Plan Certificate.

Premier Mark McGowan announced the measures Sunday, as he outlined the State’s roadmap to easing restrictions.

“Certain businesses and activities will be allowed to resume in some form,” he said.

“We encourage everyone to take the week to familiarise themselves with the new set of rules.”

Businesses with a mandated plan must ensure their Safety Plans are available for inspection by officers authorised under the Emergency Management Act.

Officers have the power to shut a business down if its Safety Plan is not adequate or it’s not complying with the plan.

Officers can also shut businesses that are putting the community at risk in any way.

CCIWA’s team of Safety and Risk experts has put together a cost-effective and comprehensive package that will help businesses not only provide a safe environment to return to work, but to respond effectively to and manage any COVID-19 incidents that may arise, protecting their business and WA.

  • assistance to complete a COVID Safety Plan that will stand up to the scrutiny of authorised inspectors
  • a COVID 19 Risk Assessment Register with identified hazards and suggested controls; and
