Economics students from across the State gained skills that will help them in their studies and future careers during the Student Economic Forum 2022.
Hosted by CCIWA and Economic Teachers Association WA on August 5 & 12, the annual event promotes careers in economics for top Year 12 economic students, and encourages a greater take up of the discipline after high school.
Schools were invited to send their top six economics students to the forum, which brought together like-minded students and economics professionals to discuss exam strategies and careers in economics.
The mornings started with an address by CCIWA Principal Economist James Walsh, whose presentation on ‘The Economic Landscape’ offered valuable information for the students as they prepare to analyse current economic policies and statistics in their ATAR exams.
Students then picked the brain of professionals in the economics industry, in a panel discussion, which included CCIWA Graduate Economist Sam Collins and Policy Advisor Noelli Bariacto.
“The diverse career pathways taken by the panel provided an invaluable opportunity for students to explore possible opportunities in economics and business,” said CCIWA Education and Training Advisor Linda Winter. “The panel was an excellent way to take economics concepts and bring them into the real world with the possibilities of future careers.”
Steven Kemp, author of economics textbooks Discovering Economics and Investigating Macroeconomics, discussed the upcoming ATAR exams with the students, addressing common errors and strategies to better prepare and succeed.
The day concluded with an interactive economics exercise, during which the students brought together concepts learned throughout the forum in a practical two-minute presentation to a panel of judges.
