High-tech tags deliver detailed livestock information

In the age of the ethical consumer, one CCIWA member has developed a remarkable piece of technology to deliver information to graziers and downstream producers.

Perth tech company and CCIWA member Xsights Digital will be deploying its high-tech animal welfare and health monitoring tags on pig farms for the Craig Mostyn Group (CMG) in 2022.

The provisionally patented Xsights’ ‘XIoT’ tag automatically collects and processes live data, at scale, for monitoring and reporting on the health and wellbeing of livestock in real time.

Pork Innovation WA (PIWA), which is also involved in the deployment, will compare outputs and validate data for the purpose of establishing machine learning procedures and rules for the different parameters of animal health and welfare.

The XIoT solution seeks to enable the health and wellbeing of livestock to be enhanced, to improve production, labour efficiency and accuracy, and to build and protect the provenance of brands.

Xsights Director Dean Phillips said the application and benefits of the XIoT Tag would inevitably extend beyond the Western Australian pork industry to include wider livestock industries such as sheep and cattle.

“In addition to location and provenance tracking, early detection of health issues with XIoT tags has the potential to reduce mortality rates and increase revenues for primary producers,” Phillips said.

“Our ‘Sensing as a Service’ model will enable users to scale with no upfront CAPEX cost while providing a number of new and automated real-time data sets to drive operational efficiencies.”

Among other features, the XIoT tag has the capability to provide information on an animal’s:

  • ID
  • Movement
  • Speed
  • Dwell
  • Location
  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Environment
  • Feeding and watering activities

The provisionally patented solution has the support of Australian Pork Limited (APL) and Murdoch University.
