FWC increases national minimum wage by 2.5%

The Fair Work Commission (FWC) has handed down a 2.5 per cent increase to the national minimum wage and award rates of pay as part of its annual wage review.
In its decision, on Wednesday (June 16), the FWC noted improvements in the economic environment over the last 12 months, adding that there were still risks associated with domestic outbreaks of COVID-19.

The decision also takes into consideration the 0.5 per cent increase to superannuation from July 1 this year.

As a result, the national minimum wage will increase to $772.60 per week, an increase of $18.80.

The change will come into effect on July 1.

However, the decision has been delayed to September 1 for staff under the general retail award and November 1 for those industries most affected by ongoing lockdowns and restrictions, including hospitality, accommodation, tourism and personal services under the following awards:

• Airline Operations – Ground Staff Award 2020

• Airport Employees Award 2020

• Amusement, Events and Recreation Award 2020

• Dry Cleaning and Laundry Industry Award 2020

• Hospitality Industry (General) Award 2020

• Marine Tourism and Charter Vessels Award 2020
