June lockdown

CCIWA CEO

Chris Rodwell

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA (CCIWA) acknowledges the State Government’s difficult decision to introduce a four-day lockdown of the Perth and Peel region. It is now confirmed there have been instances of community transmission of the Delta variant, which is highly infectious. As such the new restrictions on the economy are supported on the basis they are necessary to protect people’s health and to avoid a protracted lockdown.

At the same time, it is important to recognise that this lockdown will inflict significant harm on many Western Australian small businesses. Businesses like beauticians, nail salons, gyms, dance studios, recreation and entertainment centres, and many other retail businesses are required to close their doors for the next four days. For the owners of these businesses, this is an unsettling and stressful time. Their livelihoods and that of their families depends on the cashflow generated through their operations.

For many business owners, the family home is used as security against their bank loans.

These businesses bear the financial costs of lockdowns on behalf of society, and it is critical they are compensated quickly and appropriately.

To ensure these restrictions on small business owners can end as soon as possible, it is vital that the entire WA community come together and follow the health authorities’ advice at all times. We also encourage everyone in Perth and Peel to support businesses in their local communities.
