Childcare reform secured

AARON MOREY – CHIEF ECONOMIST

The Federal Government’s commitment to reform childcare subsidies committing $1.7 billion in the upcoming budget is a win for the Western Australian business community and has the potential to generate hundreds of millions in extra output for the WA economy.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA (CCIWA) released a comprehensive report earlier this year outlining the barriers women face returning to the workforce and the need for a financial investment to make childcare more affordable for families, particularly single parent families.

CCIWA has engaged with the Federal Government over these reform opportunities, including as part of the Prime Minister’s recent visit to Western Australia.

The Government’s announced reforms will make it easier for women to remain connected to the workforce after having children. This will help Australia tap into the full potential of its workforce, which is vital if we are to grow and diversify our economy.

CCIWA continues to engage with the Government on other areas of reform, including in relation to parental leave and fringe benefits tax. Our report also includes proposals for the State Government to consider, in particular bringing the funding for the delivery of kindy services into line with the approach in other States and Territories.

It is critical the State Government play its part to resolve the childcare challenges faced by WA families.
