The Centre for Transformative Work Design (CTWD) at Curtin University is conducting a survey to gain a better understanding on worker experiences in WA’s mining industry.
The Landmark Study Worker Survey asks participants to share their views, experiences and perceptions about working in the industry across three focus areas:
- Creating mentally healthy workplaces;
- Building a culture of safety and respect; and
- Preparing for workplace safety in future mines.
The confidential survey is open until 31 May 2023. It takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Participating in the survey enables workers to contribute to the evaluation and understanding of the State’s mining industry and provide information to help shape recommendations for positive change.
The Worker Survey is part of the Mental Awareness, Respect and Safety (MARS) Landmark study, an initiative developed as part of the WA Government’s strategy to address sexual violence and drive cultural change in the mining sector.
“[The MARS Landmark Study] is part of a whole-of-government that recognises two things: the importance of the mining sector for our economy, and the evidence that’s suggesting the need to look more deeply at some challenges in the sector,” says CTWD Professor Sharon Parker, who is leading the MARS Landmark Study, on Curtin University’s Mining Culture podcast.
“[For example] we did a study on mental health of FIFO workers in 2018, and that highlighted that about one third of FIFO workers were struggling with distress, so depression and anxiety – which is huge and was more than other sectors.“
