Tap into WA’s $123b in export markets

Michael Carter has recently been appointed Manager of the CCI’s International Trade and Investment Centre (ITIC) and will be helping WA businesses to expand, internationally.

Carter spent eight years as Trade Commissioner to India, during a 12-year stint with Austrade (Australian Trade Commission).

He’s joined CCI as he believes the Chamber has the capability and depth of international trade and investment experience to play a pivotal role in helping a range of WA companies to grow their businesses and achieve economic growth for the state by expanding overseas.

“I think that businesses have come to know CCI as a brand they can trust and rely upon to assist them in making it easier to do business,” Carter says.

“At CCI we’ve been known by international business community trading clients for a long time, providing a suite of export and import documentation services including Certificates of Origin and the ‘Australia Made’ logo subscriptions.”

Carter says that CCI began its core bespoke trade and investment consultancy service for exporters, importers and investment proponents a few years ago to help businesses with capability and appetite to expand their international horizons.

“This core offer also supports our export mentoring program administered through Austrade’s TradeStart program which we deliver through ITIC,” Carter said.

Western Australia was, by nature, an export-orientated State, he said.

Last year WA’s exports were $123.2 billion – almost 41 per cent of the nation’s total. In the services sector WA’s exports were around $6 billion, mainly education related and personal travel.

Carter has more than 25 years’ experience in international engagement, business development and government liaison. He’s worked in various senior management and marketing roles in the public sector with Austrade and with various private sector international roles in food and agribusiness, road infrastructure, banking and professional consulting in Australia and the UK.

His has an extensive network of international business contacts and has helped former clients trade in Western Europe, The Middle East, North America and Asia.

“I’ve been able to help numerous companies to develop and implement effective market entry strategies and export business plans to facilitate international engagement across a spectrum of industry sectors,” he says.

“Given WA’s strong International DNA in sectors like education services, METS (mining, equipment technology and services) and agribusiness and the reality is that we are in the trading time zone of being able to reach almost 60 per cent of the world’s population.

“We have the segue to help more companies pursue international trade and investment opportunities.”
