Diverse career path for economics students

Economics students from across the state can get excited about where their skills can lead them at Student Economic Forum 2017.

Schools are invited to send their top six economics students to the forum, which will be held on July 28 and August 4.

Hosted by CCI, in conjunction with Economic Teachers Association WA (ETAWA), the forum will bring together likeminded students and economics professionals to discuss exam strategies and careers in economics.

CCI Chief Economic Rick Newnham will present ‘The State of the Nation’ with valuable information for students who are preparing to analyse current economic policies and statistics in their WACE examinations.

Students will be able to pick the brain of professionals in the economics industry, including CCI Senior Economist Nathan Viles, Australian Bureau of Statistics data analyst David Lay and 19-year-old entrepreneur Connor McLaughlin.

The diverse career pathways taken by Viles, Lay and McLaughlin will provide valuable insights into opportunities students can explore in economics and business.

Viles’ experience in the public sector will showcase the diversity of jobs available to economics students, while McLaughlin’s entrepreneurial ventures as the founder of community project ‘Agents of Change’ will show students the potential of economics as a tool for social action.

Agents of Change is a series of video interviews with successful entrepreneurs, business leaders and changemakers that focuses on tips for success that can be applied in everyday life.

WACE chief marker Steven Kemp will discuss the upcoming WACE exams with the students, addressing common errors and strategies to better prepare and execute the examination.

Kemp is well known to students as the author of economics textbooks Discovering Economics and Investigating Macroeconomics, used across classrooms in WA.

The day will end with an interactive economics exercise where students bring together concepts learnt throughout the forum in a two-minute presentation to be presented to judges.
